JJ doesn't often look in the mirror and see much about himself that isn't average. Somewhat taller than average, average weight, average looks. He'd probably be a lot uglier if it weren't for his clear blue eyes and absolutely unwavering confidence, which would make a lot of difference. Although he's not at all old, age is starting to lighten his once vivid red hair to a nice ginger, and put crow's feet around his eyes. He has a very honest face that people seem to trust, and the pale, freckly skin of most natural redheads.
JJ makes a constant effort to stay in shape and keep himself in well-tailored suits and dapper clothing, dressing and carrying himself with dignity at all times. Because he doesn't have a clear advantage (being only regular-handsome) in the face department, he tends to emphasize the importance of dressing well and having a nice physique. He's not absolutely ripped, but slim and muscular- a good frame for suits. He is a very steady guy, not likely to get shaky hands or to lose balance easily. He has excellent posture and an easy gait, and the type of walk that makes people want to walk with him.

JJ has always been pretty secure, except for that awkward middle school phase that everyone goes through. It comes from a lifetime of being very friendly, but not entirely trusting anyone. He greatly values his own independence, and his own opinions before those of others, making him very sure of himself and allowing him to be very confident. He tends to be very gentle and in many ways effeminate, even occasionally metrosexual, since he doesn't feel the need to prove his masculinity.
Because of this, JJ is often mistaken for gay, which is simply not the truth, nor will it ever be. Charming women is a very large part of his life. He doesn't consider himself so much a player, rather preferring to see himself as a Mad Men type- handsome, wealthy and well-dressed with just a dash of that entitlement that can only be charming in confident people with nice bodies.
JJ puts a lot of value into only doing good work and improving both himself and his surroundings. On the outside, this makes him look totally perfect, but it's only because he's doing a great job of avoiding everything that he sees wrong with himself and piling it away somewhere, compensating by trying a healthier diet or a new exercise regimen.

HISTORY
As a child, JJ was always the kid that other kids' parents liked. He was polite and considerate, and a little charmer, winking at his friends' moms and getting called names like Big Chief and Sport by their dads. He lived his life like a normal kid. He had a few close friends, read comic books, chased girls up and down the playground without knowing what to do when he caught them, ran away from the school bully. His parents were incredibly supportive, especially when they thought he was gay (pretty much up until high school), and did all they could to help him and his younger brother have a normal, functioning childhood.
It wasn't until high school when JJ really started to have fun. He tended to float between social groups, from stoner to athlete to arts geek. He liked to have one foot in with every group, so he was crystal clear on everybody's gossip. he'd had a few girlfriends, nothing serious, had sex a few times, tried drugs and alcohol a few times, nothing scandalous. JJ was the guy that everybody knew of but never knew, not liked or disliked really, just always there and accepted. He gained notoriety in his senior year when he really started to have fun: having crazy adventures and telling crazy stories about how he'd found himself in a shark cage hanging from a crane, or the time he hijacked an excavator. Suddenly he was in high demand at parties, getting hit on by cheerleader girls, and was suddenly the topic of gossip rather than the messenger of gossip. It was good for a short while, until he learned the danger of bad press.
Since JJ had maintained a high GPA throughout high school, he decided there was nowhere to go but up, and applied to medical school at Penn State. The program was incredibly competitive, and JJ was almost broken by the time it was over, but he made it out the other end, in intense debt and worse for wear at 35, as a fully qualified orthopedic surgeon. A real hotshot. He had been successful in high school, but in his residency program he was rated somewhere in the middle, and was forced to accept the fact that he was pretty much just average. He accepted a job at a Philadelphia hospital, got married to a girl he wasn't entirely sure he loved, and made a living.
His career was over as soon as it started, when an allegation of rape ruined his credibility and shattered his ability to ever find another job, although he was innocent, and was found innocent by a court of law. The accusation and the press was still there. He remembered the patient, a seventeen year old girl who'd shattered her pelvis. Her mother hadn't understood that it wasn't inappropriate, it was just the examination, and the suspicion had piled up. JJ's marriage crumbled, and he eventually had to leave his job, his hometown and his son Shane to avoid the misplaced hate he was receiving. It was hard to find work elsewhere, and it was hard to get people who knew about the case to trust him.
He eventually took the first job he could find, as he was pretty much desperate. At Winslow Asylum he couldn't do orthopedics quite so much as was his passion, but there was an interesting experimental quality to his work that he really enjoyed. At least it took his mind off the son he loved but wasn't allowed to contact more than a letter with the child support check.
